Ralph Waldo Emerson (May 25, 1803 - April 27, 1882) was a philosopher, minister, and journalist who is best known as a leader in the Transcendentalist movement in the 1830s-40s. He championed the value of intuition and individualism in one's spiritual beliefs. Much of his writing was in the form of relatively short essays and articles which are still widely read today.
